Quest for Reality is a first-person exploration RPG (role-playing game) about computer and Internet addiction, inspired by true events and stories.
Due to an unknown emergency, you are forced to leave the ordinariness of everyday reality. However, instead of escaping the reality you are entering the virtual reality. Will you manage to find the way back to the reality?
We use computers daily but where lies the boundary between casual and compulsive? How can such seemingly harmless interaction inspires such serious obsession? What is it about virtuality that is superior to reality, encouraging some to go to the extremes of their physicality? Quest for Reality attempts to inform and raise an awareness on this subject, through giving the player the possibility to control and understand the actions of another and therefore yourself.
The research is represented in the video-game through different in-game elements such the environments, tasks you do, characters you speak to, the atmosphere and the narrative.
The structure of the game mimics the cause and the consequences of such addiction. Important element of the research are the interviews with the addicts that has been voice-overed and assigned to the characters in the video-game. Quest for Reality is a hybrid form of video-game which merges documentary style with fiction, striving to produce cinematic feel. The intention of this project is to explore alternative ways of telling a story by allowing the spectator to participate and experience the realities of others.
